H – Harmony

We honor the spaces—within ourselves and around us—where we live, learn, and care for one another. Harmony is more than a feeling; it’s a living, breathing practice that connects body, home, and community. In our program, youth learn to care for their bodies, organize their environments, and nurture their relationships, fostering a sense of balance and well-being. We teach practical skills like cooking nourishing meals, tending to plants, harvesting, and creating welcoming spaces that invite connection and peace. We also teach singing and songcatching, helping young people find and share their voices, and experience the joy of making music together. By cultivating harmony within ourselves and with others, we dream of neighborhoods where fences come down, gardens grow between us, and voices join together—nurturing a shared sense of belonging, wellness, and responsibility.

E – Empathy

We cultivate compassion and understanding in every interaction. Youth are encouraged to listen deeply—to themselves, to others, and to the land. Through mindfulness, emotional intelligence activities, and restorative practices, we help children recognize and honor their feelings, support one another, and build strong, caring relationships.

A – Attunement

We guide youth to be attuned to their needs and the needs of those around them. This means paying attention to physical well-being, emotional states, and the rhythms of daily life. Activities like body scans, mindful movement, and sensory exploration help children develop self-awareness and resilience, while also tuning into the collective needs of their community.

R – Roots

We ground our program in cultural heritage, land stewardship, and community connection. Youth explore their roots through storytelling, traditional arts, gardening, and intergenerational learning. By knowing where they come from and tending to the land and traditions that sustain them, children grow a strong sense of identity and responsibility.

T – Togetherness

We believe that care flourishes in community. Our program brings families, mentors, and youth together to share, create, and support one another. Through collaborative projects, shared meals, group activities, and community service, we build a network of support where everyone feels seen, valued, and uplifted.

HEART is our guiding compass—teaching youth to care for themselves, their homes, and their communities with empathy, attunement, rootedness, and togetherness. Every day, we nurture a culture of love, respect, and shared responsibility, helping children and families flourish, together.

We are reclaiming our knowledge and sharing a more Indigenized, heart-centered practice with our youth. We listen to our bodies, honor the land, and protect our culture. Our goal is to support every child in becoming their truest, freest selves—rooted in wellness, joy, and community.

We believe in building a just and free community where every child has the opportunity to thrive. To make our afterschool program accessible to all Black, Native, and Indigenous youth—regardless of financial circumstances—we invite you to join us as a Sustaining Member of our co-op.

Our Facilitators

Auntie Jess

With Heartful Rootz Afterschool Program M-F 1-6pm.

As an extension and support system for the TLC Traveling School youth program, Heartful Rootz is honored to welcome additional youth into our nurturing community, guided in part by the vibrant leadership of Jess Rene.

Auntie Jess is the embodiment of care and creativity. With a lifetime dedicated to nurturing others, Jess has cared for over 60 babies and youth as a nanny, supported individuals with disabilities, provided elder care, and served as a compassionate death doula. Their professional journey includes training as a Certified Nurse Assistant, as well as studies in Interior Design and Architecture.

A lifelong gardener, Jess is a self-taught—and Indigenous community-taught—herbalist, ethnobotanist, and ecologist, passionately creating food forests and advocating for food sovereignty for all. Their artistic spirit shines through pottery, song, body painting, tattooing, and Danza, all of which keep Auntie Jess deeply connected to their cultural roots.

Auntie Jess’s work reaches far beyond the classroom. They:

Teach Immigrant Youth Entrepreneurship Skills: Guiding young people from immigrant backgrounds in developing practical entrepreneurship skills, empowering them to create and sustain their own ventures.

Support Educators: Facilitate workshops for groups of teachers on how to Indigenize classroom and garden spaces, fostering environments that honor and integrate Indigenous knowledge and practices.

Garden Design Transformation: Organize and support the transition of single-home gardens into thriving community sharing garden spaces, cultivating food security, collaboration, and ecological stewardship. They also partner with community centers to design and establish food forests that are created by and for the community, ensuring everyone has a hand in shaping these abundant, shared resources.

As the first in their family to actively reconnect with their heritage since colonization, Jess brings a unique perspective and dedication to cultural reclamation.

Indigenous heritage on Auntie Jess's mothers side, her mother's roots are: Nahua - Otami, Zapotec, Mixteca with Tarahumara, Andean and African roots.  Their great grandmother was a Potter, and it means the world that we recover their rootz and culture! Her mother's father was mixed Spanish and they are trying to heal from colonization within their family.  On Jess's father side, his father's roots are mixed First Nations: Algonquin, Cree, Ojibway (Anishinaabeg), Iroquois (Mohawk), with French & Scottish mix, some would say Métis. Jess's father's mom is Scandinavian, their great grandmother was the first to come to the Americas in Minnesota. A descendant of the Indigenous Sámi peoples. They have not yet been claimed by their tribes.

Auntie Jess is excited to support youth in expressing their emotions in healthy ways, following their hearts and passions, curating art for markets, and boosting self-image and self-worth. They are also committed to helping young people develop attunement to their gut health, instincts, mindfulness, and a sense of belonging within the wider community.

You may have seen Jess at local markets, and you can explore their creative works at JessReneCreative.com or follow them on social media @Singing_Pots.
