Collab Café Programming
Community Care, Creative Support & Shared Possibility
Collab Café is an ongoing Heartful Rootz gathering space for connection, creativity, collective care, and community-led support.
We bring together BIPGM and LGBTQIA2S+ creatives, families, artists, writers, makers, organizers, entrepreneurs, wellness practitioners, students, educators, neighbors, and values-aligned collaborators to build relationships that are real, useful, and lasting.
This is more than a social event. Collab Café is a growing practice of showing up for one another — sharing resources, exchanging skills, strengthening family support, celebrating creative work, supporting financial well-being, and moving community resources directly toward the people creating culture, care, and possibility.
Our work is rooted in justice, belonging, empowerment, mutual support, creative freedom, and the belief that communities can build deeper systems of care together.
Who Collab Café Is For
Collab Café is designed especially to uplift and center BIPGM and LGBTQIA2S+ creatives: Black, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, Two-Spirit, gender-expansive, and questioning artists, writers, makers, cultural workers, entrepreneurs, and community builders.
- Families and caregivers
- Children and young people, when gatherings are family-friendly
- Artists, writers, bakers, chefs, musicians, performers, and makers
- Small-business owners, entrepreneurs, and emerging creative leaders
- Educators, students, mentors, and researchers
- Doctors, therapists, wellness practitioners, and community-health workers
- Nonprofits, mutual-aid groups, community organizers, and advocates
- Local businesses, sponsors, funders, and collaborators who share our values
- Anyone seeking deeper connection, meaningful community, and ways to participate in collective care
You do not need to have everything figured out before arriving. You are welcome to come with a question, an idea, a need, an offering, a creative project, a child, a friend, or simply the desire to be in community.
The Collab Café Five-Step Series
The Collab Café Five-Step Series is a community-building experience that helps participants move from introduction to action. Each step invites us to learn more about one another, identify what support is needed, share what we can offer, and create systems that continue beyond a single gathering. Participants may join for one step or return for the full series. Every gathering offers space for reflection, conversation, connection, and practical support.
Step 1
Share Your Needs & Offerings
The first step is about being seen and learning how to support one another in practical ways. Participants are invited to share:
- What we need right now
- What we are creating, building, growing, or dreaming about
- Skills, resources, services, knowledge, and opportunities we can offer
- Current challenges, goals, and areas where community support may help
- Projects, businesses, creative work, events, or causes we would like people to know about
This gathering helps make community resources visible. Someone may be looking for a photographer, a babysitter, a graphic designer, an affordable vendor, a gardening mentor, a therapist, a studio partner, a volunteer, a collaborator, or simply encouragement. Someone else in the room may be able to help. Together, we begin building a living map of our community's gifts, needs, knowledge, and possibilities.
Step 2
Building Intentional Family Support Systems
Community care includes families, caregivers, children, chosen family, and the people who help us keep going. This gathering is focused on building intentional support systems that honor the realities of parenting, caregiving, work, creativity, healing, and community participation. Bring your kids to family-friendly Collab Café gatherings. We explore questions such as:
- What kind of support helps families and caregivers truly participate in community?
- How can we make creative, wellness, and community spaces more welcoming for children?
- What does chosen family look like in practice?
- How can parents, caregivers, mentors, and neighbors support one another?
- What resources, skill-sharing, childcare exchanges, meal support, rides, or community connections would make life more sustainable?
This step honors the truth that community does not begin after childcare, work, or family responsibilities are handled. Community is built by making room for the full lives people are living. Children are part of the ecosystem. Families are part of the ecosystem. Caregivers deserve support, rest, creative possibility, and belonging.
Step 3
Healing & Financial Wealth
Healing and financial well-being belong together. Many people are expected to heal, create, build businesses, care for family, and contribute to their communities while living with financial stress, unstable income, debt, underpayment, discrimination, burnout, or a lack of access to resources. Collab Café creates space to speak honestly about these realities while sharing tools, ideas, and pathways toward greater stability. This gathering may include conversations, resources, skill-sharing, and community support around:
- Financial wellness and money confidence
- Pricing creative work and services
- Building a small business or creative practice
- Saving, budgeting, and managing income cycles
- Accessing grants, opportunities, scholarships, and community resources
- Entrepreneurship and cooperative ways of working
- Rest, boundaries, burnout recovery, and sustainable creative practice
- Healing from scarcity, isolation, and systems that undervalue care work and creative labor
We believe wealth is more than money. Wealth can include health, time, rest, safety, trusted relationships, creative freedom, cultural knowledge, access to food, family support, meaningful work, and the ability to imagine a future. At the same time, money matters. Direct financial support matters. Fair pay matters. This step makes room for both healing and practical tools for building economic power.
Step 4
Photos & Videos of You and Your Creations
Your work deserves to be seen. This step helps participants create simple, meaningful visual content that celebrates who they are and what they make. Artists, writers, makers, chefs, entrepreneurs, organizers, and community members are invited to bring creations, products, artwork, books, tools, ideas, or works in progress. Participants may receive support with:
- Portrait photos that feel natural, affirming, and true to who they are
- Short videos introducing their work, story, business, or creative practice
- Photos of products, art, food, handmade goods, and works in progress
- Social-media content for an upcoming launch, event, fundraiser, or business
- Practice speaking about their work and sharing what support they need
- Visibility for creative projects, services, and community contributions
This is not about needing to look perfect or having a polished business. It is about visibility, confidence, documentation, and honoring the creative work that is already happening. We want people to leave with content they can use to share their story, promote their offerings, apply for opportunities, connect with customers, and remember that their work has value.
Step 5
Creating Our Ecosystem of Support
The final step brings the series together. After sharing needs and offerings, strengthening family support, exploring healing and financial well-being, and documenting creative work, we ask: What do we want to build together next? This gathering focuses on turning connection into ongoing action. Participants reflect on the relationships, ideas, needs, and possibilities that emerged throughout the series, then identify ways to continue supporting one another. Together, we may create:
- Referral and resource-sharing networks
- Creative collaborations and co-hosted events
- Skill-sharing circles and peer mentorship
- Family-support and chosen-family connections
- Opportunities for vendors, artists, writers, and makers
- Group purchasing, swaps, mutual-aid efforts, and community exchanges
- Sponsorship and direct-support pathways
- Wellness, food, art, writing, and cultural gatherings
- Future Collab Café projects shaped by participant ideas
- Practical next steps for building a stronger local ecosystem of care
Collab Café is not intended to end when an event ends. The goal is to help people leave with names, connections, ideas, resources, invitations, and opportunities that continue circulating through the community.
Moon Writing & Poetry
A Writing Gathering With Direct Community Support
Moon Writing & Poetry is a Collab Café gathering for writers, poets, storytellers, lyricists, journalers, and anyone who wants to make space for their voice. This is a welcoming place to write, share, listen, experiment, reflect, and connect. You do not need to be published, experienced, or ready to perform. Bring a poem, a notebook, a story, a song lyric, an unfinished idea, a personal reflection, or simply the desire to begin.
- Guided writing prompts
- Quiet writing time
- Poetry and story sharing
- Community listening and reflection
- Creative feedback and encouragement
- Opportunities to meet other writers and collaborators
- Conversations about writing, identity, healing, culture, justice, and imagination
- Invitations to share work-in-progress in a supportive environment
Weekly Community Money Cycling
Moon Writing & Poetry includes a community-led direct-support practice called Community Money Cycling. A portion of each gathering's attendance contribution is cycled back into the creative community. Participants are invited to share what they are working on, what support would make a difference, and how direct funding could help move their writing or creative work forward. Each week, participants take part in a community voting and support process. Two selected writers, poets, or creative participants receive direct funding from the gathering's attendance contributions.
- Writing time and creative rest
- Printing, publishing, or zine-making costs
- Books, notebooks, supplies, or software
- Childcare or transportation that makes writing possible
- Editing, recording, design, or documentation support
- Workshop fees, submission fees, or creative-development expenses
- A personal creative project, story collection, performance, or community offering
This is not about competition. It is about practicing how to visibly support one another, share resources with care, and create a culture where creative work is valued in real time. Rather than waiting for a distant grant cycle, community members can help move support directly toward someone's work that week.
Try-It Labs
A Space to Test Ideas, Make Something, and Be Supported
Try-It Labs is a hands-on Collab Café program for people who want to test an idea, try a new creative direction, share a project, build confidence, or take one meaningful next step. It is a space for experimentation. Bring an idea that is still forming, a product you want feedback on, a workshop concept, a creative skill, a business offering, a recipe, a prototype, a community project, a piece of art, or something you have been afraid to start. You do not have to arrive with a finished plan. Try-It Labs is designed to make room for learning, play, feedback, practice, and possibility.
- Creative experiments and hands-on making
- Product, workshop, service, or business-idea testing
- Peer feedback and supportive reflection
- Small-group brainstorming
- Skill-sharing and mini demonstrations
- Community problem-solving
- Opportunities to share work-in-progress
- Connections to collaborators, mentors, customers, volunteers, and resources
- Encouragement to take a first, next, or braver step
Weekly Community Money Cycling
Try-It Labs also includes the Community Money Cycling practice. A portion of attendance contributions is directed back into the community through a weekly participant support process. Participants may share their idea, creation, need, or next step with the group. The gathering then participates in a respectful voting and support process. Two Try-It Labs participants each week receive direct funding from attendance contributions to support their project, creative work, business idea, or community offering.
- Materials and supplies
- Product testing or prototype costs
- Packaging, labels, printing, or website needs
- Transportation or childcare
- Vendor fees or market-table costs
- Ingredients, tools, equipment, or studio time
- Creative labor and time to complete a project
- Small-business development, marketing, or photography needs
- A first workshop, pop-up, performance, publication, or community offering
The purpose is simple: when people gather, resources can move. When people share what they are building, community can respond with more than applause. Try-It Labs helps turn encouragement into tangible support.
Community Money Cycling
How It Works
Community Money Cycling is a Collab Café practice of circulating support among participants in real time. Instead of waiting only for grants, institutions, or outside approval, we practice building a local culture of shared investment. Attendance contributions help support the gathering itself and create direct funding opportunities for people participating in Moon Writing & Poetry and Try-It Labs.
- Community members gather, participate, and contribute toward the event experience.
- Participants who want to be considered for direct support share a short description of their project, creative work, need, or next step.
- The group uses a thoughtful community voting process to identify projects or participants they want to uplift.
- Two participants receive direct funding from that week's attendance-money cycle.
- Funds move back into the community to support creative work, practical needs, new ideas, and meaningful next steps.
The exact amount of funding may vary depending on attendance, contributions, event expenses, and the number of participants. Heartful Rootz will communicate the amount available and the selection process clearly at each gathering.
Our Values for Direct Support
Community Money Cycling is guided by care, transparency, respect, and collective responsibility. We aim to create a process that is:
- Accessible and welcoming
- Rooted in dignity rather than competition
- Clear about available funds and selection practices
- Respectful of privacy and personal circumstances
- Supportive of both emerging and established creatives
- Focused on direct impact and practical next steps
- Grounded in the belief that resources should circulate through community
We recognize that one gathering cannot solve every financial barrier. However, regular practices of direct support can shift what is possible. A small amount of money at the right moment can help someone print a zine, buy materials, pay for a market table, make time to write, access childcare, launch an offering, or feel seen enough to continue.
